How A Home Examination Can Save You From The Costly Damage of Termites

Many things can cause damage to the structure of the home, and one of the most significant concerns is insect infestations. While homeowners may downplay this concern, the damage caused by a wood-boring insect infestation can cost thousands of dollars in repairs and can compromise the structural integrity of the home. One of the most damaging wood-boring insects is termites. On average, termites cause an estimated $5 to $30 billion in damages to structures in America each year with residential home damage exceeding $3 billion annually. When a home is found to have an infestation, the average damage usually exceeds $3,000 even when early an early termite inspection catches the termite infestation within the first several years. Termites may also damage garages, porches, and decks and consume twice their body weight of wood per day. There are central areas where damage is most likely to be found to occur.

Understanding Why Termites Infest Homes

While termites are found in homes throughout the world, termites are not traditionally house insects. Their main living space is in the forests. However, termites will feed off any substantial wood supply they are near. When they enter a home, they may initially find their way to the structure via firewood left near the structure of the house. They may also have infested some trees in your yard or a nearby yard. Once they have consumed all they can from a tree source, they will seek out a new source of food which can readily be your home.

Primary Signs of a Residential Termite Infestation

• Mud Trails- Mud trails or mud tubes may have an appearance of mud splattered on parts of a basement wall or concrete area. These often appear on the outside of a home. They are the pathways termites use to travel from the outside to the inside of a house. If you see what seems to be mud with defined lines branching out from one area to another, these are likely termite mud tubes.

• Powder on Wood- If an area of wood is found to have a sawdust type material around the base, it is likely termites have caused this.

• Swarms-Occasionally, a termite nest will be found through a swarm of termites congregating in an area. This is more likely with a large nest that is well established.

• Clicking Sounds in Walls-Termites are known to make a clicking sound that can sometimes be heard inside walls. They make the sound to warn other termites of potential danger.

• Termite Wings- When termites molt, they shed their wings. If more than a few elongated insect wings are found without an insect attached, they are likely to be from termites.

• Visible Wood Damage- If there is a section of wood that has visible holes in it or looks like it has been affected by dry rot, it is likely to be a termite infestation.

If any of these signs appear, it is important to get a pest control expert to perform a termite inspection to verify the presence of termites. The good news is if you have signs of termite infestation, it can be treated.
